about

My friend Ivan Reese (one of the most brilliant composers in Canadian history) showed up in a dream and accosted me in the back alley off of 1st Street and 13th (that's the old Night Gallery fire escape for you old school Calgarians). He relentlessly sang the chorus melody (night after night) at me until it stuck in my head. It sat there for maybe ten years before I managed to put it into the context of a whole song. When we were conceptualizing the second volume of the album, we all felt that there was a song missing. That was really all the impetus needed to put Ivan's melody to work, and by lucky circumstance, I had a set of lyrics drawn from another dream image (that of a moonlit carnival seen from a high tower). We basically wrote, arranged and learned this final track about a week before recording it.

lyrics

Babylonia

High above the city/I watch her as she runs/to stoke the fires of industry/and meet the rising sun/and all of her philosophy/is written to a drum/that rattles out a marching tune/for the battles yet to come////
In my bedroom eyes I’ve seen her/wasting away faster/you my friend, tell her that I’ll meet her in the queue/we are the ones who share/a legendary providence/breathlessly restless/waiting there for you////
Night after night/’til the turning of the light/day after day/yet all the stars are burned away/I’m calling on you hour after hour/from the ruins of the tower/time out of mind/turning down the blind////
From my windowed stratosphere/I hear a rusted tune/played on a cracked calliope/beneath the waning moon/now she is for real and I/to dreamer’s terror touched/have lived to long within a dream/and dreaming, dreamed too much////

about

The Great Speckled Fritillary Vancouver, British Columbia

The lovely butterfly-dragons of Sona-Nyl are insectoid creatures with beautifully-patterned wings, insect-like legs and long, curved necks and tails. These creatures feed solely on nectar, fragrant odours and silence. If threatened, a butterfly-dragon responds by emitting a rose-coloured mist from glands along the sides of its body. Anyone inhaling or even touching this mist goes deaf. ... more
