Her Majesty’s Secret Circus Come on with me now/while all the birds are laughing/and nobody’s asking for the keys to the throne/we’ll wear a cloak of stars/and stride the garden of the Earth/’til we’ve measured all her worth beneath our feet/and late as it is/there’s no one left tending to the light/and the night is yours and mine to explore/so la da da da da da da/la da da da da/la da da da//// We’ll hear an echo of the big band anytime we make a decision/la da da da/we’ll hear an echo of the big bang every time whenever we listen/la da da da/so don’t be cruel and don’t act selfish/when there’s nobody knocking at your door/the lights are out, and no one’s on the phone/’cuz strange as it seems/we’re already waiting in the wings/and everybody’s here to see the show/so la da da da da da da/la da da da da/la da da da//// Everyone that came tonight/We’re glad you made the early flight/won’t you please extinguish all your flammables/we’re gonna take off into the air/throw back your seat and have no care/if you draw a vacant stare/from the pilot/don’t be a shrinking violet/there’s no excuse for violence/sit back and enjoy the silence////
2.
Game of Fools I was a guest/in a house with unlocked doors/I played the game of fools/never knowing it was I and I alone who made the rules/you, my friend are gone/whilst I alone remain/ensconced within my/scarred and battered/frail old English heart//// When you’re gone, who’ll linger on?//// I loved a girl/way down in Summer’s Isle it was so long ago/now I’ve found her creeping through the cobwebs of my life/her bent and twisted frame/these hollowed eyes where shadows dwell/her blistered lips cry out to save me from the reveries of Hell//// When you’re gone who’ll linger on?//// The green, eternal angels where their grace upon their face when ‘ere they go/and all they know When you’re gone, who’ll linger on?/////
3.
Fling Yr Failures Fling your failures/with a flail of your flickering fingertips/fortune’s sailors/fall through the folds of their fellowship/they’ll fly far faster/let fear fall behind/they fight for the future/of the fragile minds/lost in time////
4.
Ride On 03:18
Ride On Where the bishop? Where the pawn?/Just whose side is the captain on?/Here we walk beside you/and all you know is light/ride on!//// Will we ride wild horses home/after the battle’s lost and won?/It taught me hard to wonder, if God was in my mind/ride on!//// Just watch where you’re going through the crowd/they’ll piss on anyone who dares/to hold their head up proud/so cry the heart to chain us/but we’re going fast away/I’d come along, but I came home yesterday//// Where have all the castles gone, that silver, gold and amber shone?/Now they’re far behind you, and all you own is love/ride on!//// O, Queen of worlds not yet begun/you break the starlight with the sun/but you brought as all to realize/that all we are is light/ride on!////
5.
Marveltine, or The Midnight Ocean by The Valiant Mockingbirds Hyperdramatic overdrive/system shock survival/we’re gonna shake shamanic suicide/celebrate survival/Yo! Psychic sister, save your mister/swallow sound emotion/we’re Marveltine magnificent/we sail the midnight ocean!//// My intergalactic ship sublime/the silver sun reflecting/I never ever wanna come down again/should secrets seek selecting/you’re the one that I’m in love with/set this wheel in motion/when all are gone, here’s a lonely song/we sail the midnight ocean!////
6.
Night’s Silver Shore Tom Tamblin/he went and met a mortal maiden/and there beside the well he kissed her while the sun was shining through the branches on the trees/If ever/you come upon a river/pour gold upon the water let your daughters guide you to the other side and pass away/Sun burn the day/let evening hold her sway//// O hear me/Yeah these woods are dark and dreary/ten thousand eyes will blink in rapture dreaming of the capture of a mortal such as thee/So come over/and we’ll dance in fields of clover/I’ll weave you pretty garlands for your hair so fair and spin you ‘til you can’t recall your name/on night’s silvery shore/we’ll sleep for evermore////
7.
Babylonia 04:45
Babylonia High above the city/I watch her as she runs/to stoke the fires of industry/and meet the rising sun/and all of her philosophy/is written to a drum/that rattles out a marching tune/for the battles yet to come//// In my bedroom eyes I’ve seen her/wasting away faster/you my friend, tell her that I’ll meet her in the queue/we are the ones who share/a legendary providence/breathlessly restless/waiting there for you//// Night after night/’til the turning of the light/day after day/yet all the stars are burned away/I’m calling on you hour after hour/from the ruins of the tower/time out of mind/turning down the blind//// From my windowed stratosphere/I hear a rusted tune/played on a cracked calliope/beneath the waning moon/now she is for real and I/to dreamer’s terror touched/have lived to long within a dream/and dreaming, dreamed too much////
8.
Many Splendour’d Thing The world is wheeled by words, whirling ‘round//// When you are just eighteen/and know not that you dream/you’re another figment of your mind/like one more little pattern/from a universal fire/and the Earth a broken fragment far behind you//// Remember love, is a many splendour’d thing/it’s such a joy to bring/it back to you!/O, and Time wears a funny, ragged crown/I’ll smile when I from/him down!/ ‘Cuz the world is wheeled by words, whirling ‘round!//// You are just a scream/from the silent, silver screen/like a word in painted pictures to the eye/but have you ever seen/beyond your golden mirror/all those fractured faces lost inside you?//// O, but Love!/is a many splendour’d thing!/It’s such a joy to bring/it back to you!/Time wears a funny ragged crown/I’ll smile when I frown/him down!////
9.
Event Horizon Event horizon pulls the tides in/the waves are felt/across Orion’s belt/and it blinds him/sucks our lives in/hollows out the stitch of doubt/to a singularity/one day/of infinite density//// Time is static, light is aquatic/our thoughts athirst/for the final burst/of blinding, light arriving/following after the first/of all singularities/one day/of infinite destiny//// All our lives are standing still and we’re awaiting something/seems we’ve been here once before/there’s a note on the door and I can remember the lightning//// Create a perfect nation/in your vanity/where beauty is just wasted on the young/let every shining star/in your galaxy/collapse beneath the weight of the setting sun/I’ll be what you want to see in me/I’ll do what you want me to/ain’t it true girl?/You girl!/Yo girl!/Go girl!////
10.
I Saw Two Craven Cowards One night while I lay sleepwalking/up high on Nose Hill park/I saw two craven cowards/come stumbling through the dark/their faces grim and ghastly/their eyes as read as flame/it seemed to be they knew me by my name//// The first looked like my brother/but he said his name was Jim/he wore a suit of white and he had a lot of holes in him/the woman’s name was Margaret/and her hair was of purest gold/and her bosoms were a marvel to behold//// They told me “somewhere out there’s a land that’s fair and bright”/and “somewhere there’s a land where you belong”/ and “someday you might find it kid, but until then/you’ll have to walk alone”//// So I will go down to that river of delight/I’ll drink in deep her waters and surrender to the night/be just a craven coward that’s come down from the hill/staggered by the lions he’ll have to kill////
11.
Magic 03:00
Magic On drear, forsaken shores of slumber/the beat of bells like distant thunder/painted eyes to pale to peel away/out in the field the cars have rusted/prismed light through windows dusted/marks the turning of another day//// I think it’s magic, how everything that’s beautiful/is beautifully tragic/I think it’s magic/I see there’s majesty/in tragedy/and travesty//// I knew you once/I knew your name/the apple of my eye you’d claim/the pain that marked the cruelty of our deed/I can see through your magnetic skin/the dark, majestic soul within/let’s slip into the sun with silken speed//// I think your magic/and everything you are/is beautifully tragic/you’re fucking magic/I think you’re magic/I think you’re beautiful/don’t sell your beauty to a stranger/tonight////
12.
Death is My Girlfriend O loneliness/and misery/they are my only true companions now/and Death/is my girlfriend/for she is always by my side//// How I long for her embrace/cold like the wind upon my face/and I’ll reach out and take her hand/and she will walk beside now ‘cuz she’s the one that understands//// That pain/and suffering/they are the only things that matter to me/and Death/will eat my heartache/and I will know her by her name//// How I long for her embrace/cold like the wind upon my face/I’ll reach out and touch her hand/and she will walk beside me all across the swirling desert sands////
13.
Linger On 05:34
Linger On Green lines of foliage unfold/around the corners of my mind/gilded demons prance and sway/like a riddle to unwind/and then the clock begins to chime/there’s thirteen hours ‘til the dawn/the angel voices call the tune/linger on//// Any time you call the tide/with a spirit by your side/they’re gone/you linger on/when you speak in words unclear/cursing all you once held dear/they’re gone/you linger on//// A golden filigree surrounds/the sounds that buckle and rescind/flights of whippoorwills erupt/and echo in the wind/and when the dawn breaks through the clouds/they will awake and fine me gone/the angel voices call the tune/linger on////
14.
Cormorant Arcade From our origins in the saloons/we earned our ragged wounds/crept out of our minds and in through the TV tower/these intangible lands they haunt me still/spurn pilgrims standing tall/and the cream of our grace turns to chrome of a holy power//// When the razor burn meets the worm that’s turned/and these hand-me-down hearts cease to bleat to the formless gallows/I’ll kiss you one more time/in the Cormorant Arcade/and these choruses of corpses will be hallowed//// When the witless all have drowned/we’ll sink without a sound/and the burgeoning tides will cry for the Queen’s surrender/I slept with a ghost/we drank a toast/our faces drawn and pale/I shattered my soul in the arms of the Great Pretender//// And the trumpets twined with the bells behind/but I heard not a crystal note for the rolling thunder/in the bosom of the beast/I foundered for release/’til the strength of her drunken wiles pulled me under//// The softly was I hung/and spoke with cloven tongue/the words of the spell writ well on the tree of our learning/the serpent sighed/and grinning wide/the blood flowed forth like flame/and the dovetails of the ages all were burning!//// And with the pinioned past held to the mast/let our sails to the grinding wind remain unbroken/a vision of the truth/I witnessed in my youth/but the meaning passed before the word was spoken////

about

The Great Speckled Fritillary Vancouver, British Columbia

The lovely butterfly-dragons of Sona-Nyl are insectoid creatures with beautifully-patterned wings, insect-like legs and long, curved necks and tails. These creatures feed solely on nectar, fragrant odours and silence. If threatened, a butterfly-dragon responds by emitting a rose-coloured mist from glands along the sides of its body. Anyone inhaling or even touching this mist goes deaf. ... more
